How It Works

Set the drum outside, anywhere the rain can reach it: a tree stump, a porch railing, a garden table or a balcony rail.

Every raindrop that hits one of the nine tongues rings one clear note. All nine are tuned to the same five-note scale, so every note sounds good next to every other. In a light rain you hear a few soft notes a minute. In a steady rain it sounds like a slow, gentle tune.

No batteries, no app, nothing to plug in. On dry days, play it with the mallets or your fingertips, or pour a watering can slowly from about two feet above it.

What people say about their rain drums

Set it on the stump the day it came. Three days later a real afternoon storm rolled through and the whole backyard was ringing.

Sarah M., Boulder, CO

It has been on the deck rail through a full winter of rain and has not marked. The grey afternoons are the good part now.

Verified

Jennifer R., Portland, OR

Kitchen windowsill, right where I do the dishes. I leave the window cracked when it starts, just to hear it.

Verified

Dana K., Burlington, VT

It lives on the patio table. We eat out there now just so we are there when it starts.

Verified

Ray D., Savannah, GA

On the stone wall by the drive. The mail carrier stopped and asked where the music was coming from.

Verified

Carol W., Athens, GA

Opened the box on the porch and set it on the rail that same afternoon. My husband went back out twice just to listen.

Verified

Bev S., Ann Arbor, MI

Bought a second one for my sister. She says it is the best thing on her porch, and it did not cost much at all.
