Each Grave Riser is put together and finished by hand in Doc Ashbury’s garage workshop, the same way he built creatures for a haunted attraction for over 30 years. The head and the clawed hands are sculpted and hand-painted, which is why the cracks, the wounds and the weathering sit slightly differently on every piece – no two faces are identical. The robe is cut from heavy fabric, then deliberately torn, frayed and aged by hand, and the loose gauze netting across the chest is draped and knotted individually rather than sewn on flat.
Inside sits the part he cares most about: a battery-driven motion mechanism on a sound sensor, so the arms react to noise around them instead of running on a timer. The whole figure is built on a collapsible frame, so it folds flat after the season and comes back out the next October.
