Teresa Lambert, 70, has worked clay by hand in Seagrove, North Carolina for 47 years. These 184 ghost candle holders came out of the very last firing of the brick kiln her late husband Dale built in 1984.

The eyes and grin are cut out with a small knife while the clay is still soft. That is why every jack-o'-lantern face is just a little different.
Light the candle, dim the lamp, and the carved face throws a warm orange glow and a soft ghostly shadow across the wall behind it.
Fired clay has already been through far more heat than a tealight puts out. It won't warp, yellow or scorch the way plastic decorations do.
The rising ghost, the dripping pumpkin rim, the little skulls, the spider and the bat — every detail is painted by Teresa, then fired again to set the color.
The weight of the clay sits low in the base, so it stands firm on a windowsill, mantel or table and doesn't want to tip.

Every ghost is shaped and painted by hand, so the face, the paint and small details vary slightly from piece to piece. No two are exactly alike — that is the handwork, not a flaw. As with any candle, never leave a burning flame unattended.
