Pauline’s EmberOwl — finished by hand in a stone workshop in Longnor, Staffordshire
Pauline Bloor, sixty-seven, Longnor, in the Staffordshire Moorlands. Forty-two winters of finishing garden owls one at a time — 7,318 of them, counted in four notebooks. She lights at dusk, wakes when something crosses the garden, and just over six hundred of her are all that is left.
“My hands don’t keep up any more, and hardly anybody pays for proper handwork now. So this is the last collection. I want them in gardens where somebody actually looks out of the window at night.”
13 cm owl on a 44 cm stake. Solid metal body, hand-painted, warm-white solar LED.

Six things that separate this owl from a garden-centre solar light
🌅
The Dusk Switch
A light sensor, not a timer. She reads the actual sunset and comes on by herself — just before four in December, gone half nine in June. Two to four hours of direct sun is a full charge, and a full charge carries her ten to fifteen hours.
👀
The Motion Wake
A second sensor watches the garden. When something moves within range she turns her head, lifts her wings, brightens and calls — then settles and goes quiet. She reacts to what is actually there; she does not flap about all night for nobody.
🐇
The Second Job
This is where the first one came from: Pauline’s husband Derek built it the June the rabbits had every one of her lettuces. A small pale shape that turns, lights up and calls out when something comes close is exactly the kind of thing a rabbit is wired to keep away from — and letters about untouched hostas turn up in her post all season.
🎨
The Three-Layer Build
The build Pauline learned in 1986 from Wilf Mountford, an old figure painter from the Burslem potbanks: a solid metal body with cut-outs for the eyes and feather channels, a weatherproof coat over it, then the fine tones and feather lines laid in by hand. It is that last layer that gives the bird a face — and it is the one no factory pays for.
💡
The Warm Light
Warm white, aimed down through the base and the eyes. Not the cold blue flicker of a bargain-bin stake light — this reads as lamplight, which is why people put her by the front door instead of down by the back fence.
🌧
The Weather Seal
IP65-rated over a solid metal core, built in a village that is snowed in most winters and drops to minus fifteen. Rain, wind, road grit and July sun. Most cheap solar lights fail at the seam where water gets to the cell — that seam is where the sealing coat goes.
From the workshop
“People ask me why a solar light should cost what mine do. Three things kill a cheap one: water getting to the cell, a battery too small to carry a winter night, and a sensor that is really just a timer, so it burns itself out at the wrong hour. Every one of those is a decision somebody made to save forty pence. I have owls out there that went in the ground eleven winters ago and still come on. That is not luck — that is the seal and the panel, and it is the only part of this job I have never been willing to cheapen. Same reason the head and wings only move on the sensor. I could have had her going all night on a timer and sold twice as many. She would also have been dead by March, and everybody on the street would have hated her.”

What you are actually getting
A finished piece, not a moulded blank. Feather lines, eye tone and shading laid in by hand over the sealed metal body — the reason it reads as a bird from three metres away instead of a plastic decoy.
Light that runs itself. Two to four hours of direct sun gives ten to fifteen hours of warm-white light, on automatically at dusk. No cable, no socket, no switch, no bulb, nothing on your electricity bill.
She wakes when the garden does. Motion within range triggers head and wing movement, a brighter light and an owl call — then she settles. It is the part every visitor comments on, and the reason the rabbits stop testing your borders.
Together and in the ground in under a minute. Owl into the solar head, head onto the pole, pole onto the spike, spike into soil, bark chippings, gravel or a planter. No cables, no plugs, no tools. Move it whenever the garden changes.
Built to stay outside. IP65 weatherproof coat over a solid metal body — through rain, snow and summer heat, all year round.
Just over six hundred remain and there is no restock. The workshop closes at the end of the month. There is no one taking it over.

Good Questions
Before You Order
When will my order ship?
The maker keeps a small number finished and ready. Orders ship straight from the workshop within 3 business days, and you'll get a tracking number the moment it's on its way. If a batch sells out, the page will say so honestly — and you can join the waitlist for the next one.
What if it arrives damaged or I don't love it?
You have 60 days to change your mind — send it back for a full refund, no questions asked. And if anything ever fails on it, the Back Road Guarantee covers repairs or replacement for life, handled directly with the maker.
Is every piece really made by one person?
Yes. Every piece is made start to finish by one maker — cut, finished, signed, and wrapped by hand. That's why batches are small and why yours will carry a hand-written number.
Will mine look exactly like the photos?
Almost — but not perfectly, and that's the point. Natural materials vary in grain and tone, so every piece is one of a kind. What never varies is the craftsmanship behind it.
Is it a good gift?
It's our most-gifted item. Every order arrives hand-wrapped in kraft paper with twine and a signed note from the maker — no receipt in the box, so it ships straight to the lucky person.

Absolutely stunning quality!
The craftsmanship is unlike anything I've found online. Wish there was more in stock — grabbed the last one and couldn't be happier.

The packaging alone made me smile
Arrived faster than expected and came with a handwritten note. In a world of Amazon boxes and bubble wrap, this felt like receiving a gift from a friend. That personal touch is everything.
