Orval Coulter, 73, carved and lettered 311 storefronts across four counties for 47 years. These 341 pieces are the Main Street he grew up on — cut from the last of the butternut his father stood up to dry between 1958 and 1971.

Every sign is incised with a V-tool in one pass, then the groove is flooded by hand with 1-Shot lettering enamel — the same paint that went on real shop windows.
Tilt it under a lamp and turn it. A cut letter changes — one wall of the V goes bright, the other drops into shadow. A printed letter looks identical from every angle.

The enamel is flooded down into the groove, not laid across the surface. That is why the lettering does not lift at the edge the way a printed sign does after a season or two.

Each storefront measures about 6 in / 15 cm across and 5 in / 13 cm tall — a hand-sized piece, and noticeably smaller than the photographs suggest. Because every letter is cut and painted by hand, tone and grain vary slightly from piece to piece. No two are exactly alike — that is the hand, not a flaw.
