The Moyne River Weave
Three-layer cotton on a four-shaft floor loom a Geelong cabinetmaker built in 1953, inherited from Maureen’s mother. Press it flat in a suitcase and it springs back into the shell silhouette.

Maureen Kerrisk has woven shell handbags on the back verandah of her bluestone cottage on Gipps Street in Port Fairy since 1977 — 2,299 of them, every one numbered in a leather ledger. Her grandmother Bridget took the cottage in 1934; her mother Eileen added the hand-strung pearl strap in 1963. Maureen is the third and last Kerrisk woman at that loom. Dry macular degeneration means she can still weave but can no longer see to thread the 134 freshwater pearls each strap takes. The final batch is numbered #2,254 to #2,299 — 46 handbags. There will be no #2,300.
