How is it made?
Each Lantern Witch starts in a mold Margie makes herself, taken from the original she carved by hand in 1985. She pours the resin a few pieces at a time and makes a fresh mold every couple of weeks, before the fine detail can soften. Once a witch comes out of the mold, she trims and sands it by hand and clears every opening in the bare-branch skirt with a hobby blade, so the light comes through clean. The hand-tinted amber panel goes in behind the skirt. Then comes the paint, all by hand: a dark base, a wash worked into the recesses, and bronze highlights dry-brushed onto the raised edges. Finally she fits the small solar panel on the back, then seals, weights, wires and tests each piece. Sixty-two steps in all, which is why no two come out identical and why the run is as small as it is.
