The 432Hz Calibration
Margaret tunes every drum to A=432Hz instead of the industry-standard A=440Hz. Eight cycles softer. She has tuned to 432 since her first drum in 2015 and has never touched 440 again.
The Oak Creek Anchor
Every drum gets a final tuning check against a small grey river stone Margaret picked up on Oak Creek in 2021. It rings at a quarter-tone between F and F-sharp. Hers is the one.
The Pentatonic Promise
Nine notes, all pentatonic. Every note harmonizes with every other note. There is no wrong note. A six-year-old can play it. Someone who has never touched an instrument can play it.

A note from the forge at Oak Creek:
Margaret Hayes has worked steel in a small forge beside her cabin three miles south of Sedona since 1991 — garden gates first, then weather vanes, copper birdbaths and outdoor sculpture. In August 2015 a commission refused to work: a flat steel disc with five cut tongues, ordered as a wind catcher. She set it on a tree stump behind the forge and forgot about it. Two months later, in the middle of an afternoon storm, the thing was singing — a clean, pitched note for every raindrop. By 2017 the forge made nothing else.
By spring 2025 her hands had started to tell her things she had been ignoring. The fine work — the millimeter-precise filing of the tongues — was no longer steady. Some mornings she could still do it. Most mornings she could not. She can still forge a gate. She can no longer file a tongue to pitch, and that is the whole job.
So this is the last batch she will tune herself. 290 drums, one at a time. After these, the tuning hammer goes down.
