Margaret “Maggie” Whitfield has hand-quilted travel bags in a small workshop overlooking the bay in Sausalito, California, since 1987 — more than 18,000 of them, every one cut, quilted and appliquéd by hand on the same industrial Singer. The arthritis in her fingers no longer lets her quilt for the long stretches the work needs, and her eyes ask for more rest than they used to. There is no successor: nobody wants to sit down for days on end and quilt a travel bag anymore.
So she made one last run and stopped. That final collection comes to 1,200 bags, split across five designs. When they are gone the pattern boxes go up into the attic. There is no restock, because there is nobody left to restock it.
