Built by hand in a granite shed in Harcourt, Victoria, for rooms where a candle isn’t allowed

Laurie Tregear, seventy-six. Forty-seven years building fireplaces, and one small one for his wife’s bedside table. His hands are finished, and 327 lanterns are all that is left.

“A buyer from Sydney offered to take every lantern on the shelf and have them copied in a factory for A$379 boutiques. I built the first one for my wife, in a room where she wasn’t allowed a candle. I’d be ashamed to look at her picture if it ended up in a ski-shop window with somebody else’s name on the bottom.”

— Laurie Tregear, stonemason, Harcourt, Victoria

🔥
The Lantern
Round black frame, painted logs, a low flickering glow.
📏
Bedside Size
18.5 cm tall, 20 cm wide. About the height of a hardback book.
✋
Cool to the Touch
No flame, no heat. Nothing to blow out at bedtime.
🎁
Made to Be Given
Most of these are not bought for the person ordering.
Four things that set this lantern apart
🪵
The Woodpile Logs
The logs were patterned on split red gum from the Tregears’ own woodpile, the wood Gwenda watched him stack every March. The embers are painted into the cracks by hand, so the glow sits low, where a real fire glows an hour in, not up front like a bulb.
🕯
The Uneven Glow
A cheap imitation puts a flat orange light behind a plastic log. Laurie built his the way he watched real fires burn down for half a century: brighter, dimmer, never on a rhythm you can count. From the couch or across a small bedroom, it reads like a real fire.
🛏
The Bedside Size
The first one had to fit on Gwenda’s bedside table at the aged care home in Castlemaine, and every one since is the same size. It is a small fire for a small room: a bedside table, a windowsill, a bookshelf, a spot on the kitchen bench. Not a mantelpiece fireplace, and not meant to be.
✋
The Hand Test
Most lanterns ask you to trust the label. Laurie asks you to put your hand on it. Switch it on, let it glow all evening, then lay your palm flat on the front. It is cool. No flame to blow out, nothing that can tip into a curtain, nothing to worry about if you doze off with it on.
From 31 years in the fire service

“Candles start more than a thousand house fires a year in this country, and more than a third of them start in a bedroom. July is the worst month, and the first cold snap the worst week of the year. Once you are past sixty-five, you are about twice as likely to be hurt in a house fire. That is why so many aged care homes ban them. A thing like Laurie’s gives people the part they miss, without the part that used to get me out of bed at two in the morning.”

— Trevor Mancini, retired fire brigade captain, central Victoria

Who this is for
🔥 Anyone who misses a real fire 🏠 Units and apartments without a fireplace 👩‍👧 Mum’s room at aged care 🎁 The parent who already has everything 🕯 Candle lovers who gave up candles 🐈 Homes with cats, dogs and grandkids 📚 Bedside tables, bookshelves and windowsills 🎄 Christmas presents and cold winter nights
What you are actually getting
  • A little fire, not a light bulb. The glow sits low in the painted cracks between the logs and flickers unevenly, the way coals breathe an hour after the last log went on.
  • Cool to the touch, all evening. No flame and no heat, which is why the aged care home in Castlemaine let Gwenda keep the first one on her bedside table.
  • Sized for a small room. 18.5 centimetres tall, 20 centimetres wide, 10 centimetres deep. A tabletop fire you can see from the bed, not a mantelpiece fireplace.
  • One touch on, one touch off. A single button at the base. Nothing to find in the dark, nothing to set up.
  • Yours is a little different. Every set of embers was painted by hand, so no two lanterns glow exactly alike.
  • 327 exist and there is no restock. Laurie’s hands are finished and the shed goes with the house before Christmas. When the shelf is empty, that is the end of it.
🛡
30 days, no argument

If it doesn’t make the room feel different, send it back within 30 days and get your money back. Nobody has sent one back to Laurie yet. Once it is lit on somebody’s bedside table, they don’t want to give it up.

Please read before ordering

This is a tabletop lantern, about the height of a hardback book. The photographs are taken close up, so please check the measurements: 18.5 cm tall, 20 cm wide, 10 cm deep. It is made for a bedside table or a shelf, not to stand in front of a hearth.

The fire is light, not flame, and it gives off no heat. The logs are cast resin, patterned on real split red gum and painted by hand, not wood. We would rather say so here than let anybody find out later.

It looks its best in a dim room in the evening. In bright daylight it is a quiet little decoration. Switch off the lamps and it becomes a fire.

It takes 3 AA rechargeable batteries, and they are not in the box. You charge them inside the lantern with the USB cable that comes with it. Please use rechargeable AA batteries only – ordinary single-use batteries must never be charged.

The Final Series

Message from the workshop:

After forty-seven years building fireplaces across central Victoria, Laurie Tregear can no longer hold a brush steady. He built these lanterns in his granite shed in Harcourt in the year after he lost his wife Gwenda, most of them before the sun came up, each one painted by hand for rooms where a candle isn’t allowed. 327 were finished. When these are gone, there is no restock and no second run.

Why there is no second batch

Some things are made by one pair of hands, for decades, and then never again.

The Final Series is the last work of craftspeople who are putting down their tools. No factory, no successor, no second batch. Just the final pieces from their workshops, each one shaped by a lifetime of getting it right.

When they're gone, they're gone.

What Laurie's customers are saying

Customer selfie on her couch next to the glowing fireplace lantern

We pulled the old wood heater out years ago and I've missed it every winter since. This sits next to the couch now and goes on as soon as it gets dark. Smaller than I pictured but it's the right size for a side table. Cool to touch, which the grandkids love testing.

Customer in his recliner next to the glowing fireplace lantern

The wife reckoned I'd never use it. Now it goes on every night once the footy's finished. Looks like the real thing with the lights off, and the touch button's easy, no fiddly little switch to find.

Fireplace lantern glowing on a bedside cabinet in an aged care room

Mum's aged care home won't allow candles so this was perfect. The staff were fine with it straight away because it doesn't get warm. Mum calls it her fire and asks for it to be switched on every night after tea.

Customer selfie holding the glowing fireplace lantern in her apartment

No way I'm allowed a real fire in an apartment so this is the next best thing. Turned up heaps quicker than I thought. Just so you know, batteries aren't included, you need 3 rechargeable AAs and you charge them inside it with the USB cable. Worth it, it's the cosiest thing in my place.

Customer holding the fireplace lantern in a Queenslander kitchen

Bought this for my mum, she's moved into a smaller place with no fireplace. Was a bit worried it'd look cheap but it feels solid and the logs actually look like timber. Well packed too, came in one piece.

Fireplace lantern glowing on a bookshelf in a lounge room

Didn't think a little lantern would make much difference but the lounge feels warmer just looking at it of an evening. In full daylight it's a bit quiet, it's really an evening thing. Colours are just like the photos.
