June's Cozy-Weight Halloween Patchwork Blanket
Printed From a Quilt She Sewed in 1994
June Ratliff, sixty-seven, has sewn in Bristol, Tennessee since 1987. Forty-two blocks, eleven months of evenings, one Halloween quilt for her daughter. It hangs on her sewing room wall to this day — and it is the pattern on this blanket.
“See that ghost, top left? It is crooked. I sewed it at half past one in the morning and I was too stubborn to take it out. It is on every one of these blankets now. Crooked.”
— June Ratliff, Bristol, Tennessee
What Arrives
Six Things a Factory Design Does Not Do
“Two things stand out. The grain runs true, which almost nothing at this price does, and the edge has been guided rather than serged — the stitch spacing varies by a hair along the run. People mistake that variation for a fault. It is the opposite. A serged edge is faster and it is the first thing to fail. I have pulled apart enough returned goods to know which one comes back.”
Dale Whitcomb, textile technologist, thirty-one years in mill quality control, Hickory, North Carolina
Where It Ends Up
What You Are Actually Getting
- A real pattern, not clip art. Scanned block by block from a quilt that took eleven months to sew.
- An edge somebody guided. Cut and finished one blanket at a time, not run through an overlocker.
- Colour that survives the wash. Cold-set before cutting, so the orange does not go pink in November.
- Weight you can feel. Double-brushed fleece that hangs instead of standing up off the chair.
- One run only. The print roll was financed as a single order. There is no restock.
Unfold it, wash it, put it over the chair for a week. If it is not what it was described as, send it back. A short email is enough to start it.
The edges vary slightly from blanket to blanket. That is not a defect and it is not an accident — each one is cut singly and its edge guided by hand, so the stitch spacing shifts by a hair along the run. A perfectly uniform edge would mean it went through a machine at four thousand stitches a minute. This one did not.

Why This Run Exists
Why This Run Exists
A note from the sewing room:
June Ratliff has sewn in Bristol, Tennessee since 1987 — the first sixteen years in a home textile mill that moved overseas in 2003, and on her own ever since. The pattern on this blanket is a Halloween quilt she sewed for her daughter in 1994: forty-two blocks, eleven months of evenings after her shift. It still hangs on the wall of her sewing room.
In February a home decor company that runs sixty-one stores ordered 1,800 of them. June financed the entire print roll up front and hired two machinists to fill the order. In August the company went out of business and cancelled everything. The blankets were already finished.
“See that ghost, top left? It is crooked. I sewed it at half past one in the morning and I was too stubborn to take it out. It is on every one of these blankets now. Crooked.”

Where June’s blankets ended up
I have bought a Halloween throw nearly every year and thrown one out nearly every year. This one has actual weight to it. It went over the back of the recliner and stayed there instead of sliding off every time somebody sat down.

My granddaughter found the crooked ghost within about four minutes and has not stopped talking about it. She will not watch anything now unless she is under it.

The edge is not perfectly even and I want to say that is exactly why I kept it. You can see where somebody guided it. My mother sewed and I know the difference on sight.

Washed it twice already because of the dog. Same orange it was when it arrived. I have had store ones go pink on me by Thanksgiving.

Bought the largest one for my sister, who decorates for Halloween the way other people decorate for Christmas. She held it up, went quiet, and then asked who made it. That does not happen with things I order online.

It lives on the porch swing from the first of October. Three separate neighbours have stopped on the walk to ask where it came from, and one of them ordered one that evening.

What sold me is that the plaid runs straight. Every seasonal blanket I own leans a little and it has bothered me for years without my ever working out why. Took this one to the fall festival and did not freeze.

How is it made?
How is it made?
The pattern was scanned block by block from a 42-block Halloween quilt hand-sewn in 1994 — every faded patch and stitch line is in the print, which is why it reads as cloth rather than clip art. The print follows the grain of the original instead of being stretched to the roll, so the plaid blocks stand square out to the edge. Each blanket is then cut singly and its hem guided through the machine by hand rather than serged at speed. That is why no two edges are identical, and why none of them curl after washing.
