The Applied-Body Method
The creature is a second gather of hot glass laid onto the wall of the tumbler while both are still soft. The two melt into one piece. There is no seam, no adhesive and nothing that can lift at the edge in a dishwasher.
The Ring Pass
Every cobalt ring on the octopus goes on individually with a fine rod. Each one is under two millimetres, smaller than a grain of rice. There are fifty to seventy of them on a single glass.
The Sucker Bead Line
The clear beads running down the underside of each arm are set one at a time. They are not decoration — they are what gives your fingers something to catch on when the glass is wet.
The Borosilicate Rule
Lead-free 3.3 laboratory glass, the same grade used in scientific glassware. It takes thermal shock roughly three times better than souvenir glass. Ice water into a warm glass, hot tea into a cold one, nothing happens.
The Low-Centre Set
350 ml, ten centimetres tall, no stem, deliberately heavy in the base. The creature sits low so the hand lands there on its own. Built for a bloke coming in off a boat with cold hands.
The Unbroken List
All eight ship together, always. The list was whole for thirty-seven years and Glenys will not break it up for a sale. Eight boxes, one carton, one number on one card.

A fused body with individually set rings takes hours, and the maker either absorbs that or stops. What is unusual here is not the skill on its own — it is that a single pair of hands carried a complete eight-piece programme through to the end, without a mould anywhere in the process. Sets like that normally only survive in museum collections.”

What you are actually buying
- Made entirely by one pair of hands. Every glass in this carton was worked at the same torch, in the same shed, by the same person. There is no workshop team and no outsourced stage.
- No mould at any point in the process. That is why no two arm curls or fin angles sit the same way, and why the set reads as eight individuals rather than eight copies.
- Fused, not fixed. The creature and the tumbler are one piece of glass. Nothing is printed, glued, transferred or pressed on.
- Built for the top rack. Borosilicate 3.3 handles the dishwasher and the freezer without crazing, although Glenys would rather these were washed by hand.
- A closed edition of 124 sets. Numbered by hand, capped by the 124 seahorses, and with no second run of any kind planned or possible.
Thirty days, and one condition
Use them first. If the set is not right, send an email and it goes back — no restocking fee and no explanation needed. Glenys would rather have a set back on the shelf for somebody who wants it than sitting in a cupboard because somebody felt awkward about asking.
About the hand work: these are worked freehand at a torch, so no two are identical. Small differences in the curl of an arm, the angle of a fin or the depth of colour are part of the method, not faults. The set is sold complete and is not available as single glasses — that is Glenys’s condition, not a bundling rule.

The maker keeps a small number finished and ready. Orders ship straight from the workshop within 3 business days, and you'll get a tracking number the moment it's on its way. If a batch sells out, the page will say so honestly — and you can join the waitlist for the next one.
What if it arrives damaged or I don't love it?
You have 60 days to change your mind — send it back for a full refund, no questions asked. And if anything ever fails on it, the Back Road Guarantee covers repairs or replacement for life, handled directly with the maker.
Is every piece really made by one person?
Yes. Every piece is made start to finish by one maker — cut, finished, signed, and wrapped by hand. That's why batches are small and why yours will carry a hand-written number.
Will mine look exactly like the photos?
Almost — but not perfectly, and that's the point. Natural materials vary in grain and tone, so every piece is one of a kind. What never varies is the craftsmanship behind it.
