A hummingbird on the move doesn't scan your gutters — it scans for flowers. So the 24-inch stake puts the feeder at flower height, down among your salvia and zinnias, where he's already looking. Set two, three or four out of sight of each other and no single bully can guard them all. “He needs it where he's looking, and more than one place.”
Red is a hummingbird's signpost, and the flower-shaped port on top is all the red he needs — so nothing red ever goes in the water. Plain white sugar and water, one to four. A feeder only helps if three things are right: it sits where the birds are already looking, down among the flowers; it doesn't drip, so it isn't taken over by wasps and ants; and it can be scrubbed properly, because a bird that tastes spoiled nectar rarely comes back. Put out more than one, out of sight of each other. Get that right, and the bird that fuels up in your flower bed this fall may be hovering over the very same spot next spring.”

A note on handmade variation and wild visitors: Every feeder is thrown and painted by hand, so shape, brushwork, glaze color and the crackle pattern vary from one to the next — that is the mark of real handwork, not a fault. And hummingbirds are wild. Sited well — among red or orange blooms, in a bed you can see from a window, out of the afternoon sun — a feeder is often found within a week or two, but the timing belongs to the bird, not to us. Two things make more difference than anything else, and both are free: don't cut back your salvia, zinnias or bee balm until frost does it for you, and don't take your feeders in early — leaving them up does not stop hummingbirds from migrating, so keep it out until two weeks after you see your last one. Fill it with 1 part plain white sugar to 4 parts water, never red dye and never honey. Fill it only halfway if it isn't emptying, and change it every 2 days in real heat, every 3–5 days in mild weather. Ants can climb any stake, so if they find it, move it a few feet. Push the stake in until it stands firm and straight, deeper in soft soil. Before the hard freezes, empty the belly and bring it inside — leave the stake where it stands, so it's in the same spot when they come back in spring.
