The mass sits behind the shelf line, in the hip and the raised tail. That is why it holds an edge with no screw, no bracket and no adhesive — including in a rental you are not allowed to drill. Hollow figures need adhesive, and adhesive on a painted shelf takes the paint with it.
The curl of the front paw is a working hook: 22 mm opening, rated to four pounds. Lantern at night, reading glasses or keys by day. A hook that happens to be a cat.
A scaled copy of the brass paraffin lamp that has hung over Elsie’s bench since 1981 — the building has 1890s wiring. Eight posts around the glass instead of four, the flared foot, the crown vent.

“The cold light is not a small detail, it is the whole thing. I spend a good part of my working life on damage that came from somebody putting a warm lamp on a bookshelf. Heat pulls moisture out of leather and hide glue, the hinge stiffens, and then it cracks the first time the book is opened. An unheated LED against a row of spines is genuinely inert. And a piece that balances instead of adhering is the right answer for a bookcase — I have taken adhesive residue off more shelves than I would like to count.”

Elsie Thorne has repaired and rebound books in the back room behind a bookshop on Warren Street in Hudson, New York since 1981 — 6,412 of them, every one logged in a ledger. In 2019 her shop cat Barty died, and that winter she carved him out of basswood because the shelf above her bench looked wrong empty. The building sold in the spring and the room becomes an apartment; her keys are due back on December 31. Basal thumb arthritis means there will be no further run — the last pour came out of the moulds in January and February, and when those are gone there are no more.
