Earlene’s Cat & Bird Gloves

FINAL BATCH · ONLY 103 PAIRS

Soft knitted winter gloves with a little secret: a black cat stitched into the left palm and a tiny bird near the tip of the right middle finger. Put your hands together, and the cat looks up at the bird.

“Every single one goes through my own two hands.”

“People open their hands, they look, and then they smile. Every single one. That’s why I kept making them for fifteen winters.”

Earlene Pelletier, 74, Fort Kent, Maine

Made by hand in a farmhouse kitchen in Fort Kent

Earlene Pelletier knitted her first pair in 2011 for her husband Lucien, who feeds the chickadees from his hand every winter morning. Their black cat Pepper used to watch him from the kitchen windowsill. So Earlene stitched Pepper onto one palm and a chickadee onto the other, and when Lucien cupped his hands for the seed, Pepper was finally watching her bird up close.

The neighbors wanted a pair. Then the church, then the Christmas craft fair in the parish hall. For fifteen winters Earlene knitted about five pairs a week by the wood stove and embroidered every cat and every bird herself. Arthritis has now made the fine stitching too hard. These 103 pairs are the very last, and her granddaughter Kenzie ships them from Fort Kent.

What arrives at your door

  • One pair of Earlene’s Cat & Bird Gloves in the color you choose
  • Knitted by hand, cat and bird embroidered by hand
  • Folded in tissue paper by Earlene herself, ready to give

How the little picture works

1Slip the gloves on. Apart, you see a cat on one palm and a tiny bird on the other.
2Hold both hands out, palms up, and bring them together side by side.
3Now the cat looks up at the bird. Watch whoever you show it to start smiling.

Six things that make them Earlene’s

NO. 01

A picture that completes itself

The cat sits low on the left palm, the bird near the tip of the right middle finger. Together they tell a tiny story every time you hold out your hands.

NO. 02

Stitched, not printed

Each cat is hundreds of small stitches laid side by side. You can feel the embroidery with your thumb. That is how you know it’s one of hers.

NO. 03

A long ribbed cuff

About 2.75 inches of snug ribbing that tucks under your coat sleeve, so the cold stays out at the wrist.

NO. 04

Soft, stretchy knit

A fine, even knit that stretches over the knuckles and moves with your fingers, so you can still button a coat or hold a cup.

NO. 05

One size, honestly described

About 8.7 inches long and 4.9 inches across the palm. Comfortable on most women’s hands; very large hands may find them snug.

NO. 06

Ready to give

Most pairs go to someone else: mothers, sisters, friends who love cats or birds. They arrive folded in tissue, no wrapping needed.

Questions people ask Kenzie

Are they warm enough for a real Maine winter?
They are soft, everyday winter gloves for walks, errands, the bus stop and the bird feeder. On the coldest, windiest days Earlene wears them under a pair of mittens, the way people up north have always done.

Can I use my phone with them on?
No. The fingertips are plain knit, just like the gloves Earlene has always made. You’ll need to slip one off to use a touchscreen.

Is every pair exactly the same?
Very nearly. Because each cat and bird is stitched by hand, you may notice tiny differences in the tilt of an ear or the curve of a tail. Earlene says that is how you tell a real one.

Which color should I choose as a present?
Dusty Rose has always been the most-gifted color at the craft fair. Oatmeal goes with almost any coat, and Midnight Black is the favorite of people who love the silver cat.

Will there be more later?
No. These 103 pairs are the last Earlene will make. When they are gone, the shop corner closes.

Care & fit

Hand wash in cold water with a little mild soap, press the water out gently in a towel and lay flat to dry. Don’t wring them and don’t iron over the embroidery. The gloves are one size: about 8.7 inches long and 4.9 inches across the palm, with a soft stretch. If you have very large hands, they will feel snug.

What Earlene's customers are saying

Customer selfie oatmeal gloves

Bought the oatmeal pair for myself and I'm totally obsessed. You can feel every stitch of the little cat with your thumb, it's real embroidery and not some iron on patch. They're thinner than my old ski gloves but surprisingly warm, and I can still work my car keys in them.

Sherry W., Mansfield, Ohio

Dusty rose gloves in gift box

Ordered the dusty rose for my mom's birthday. They came folded in tissue paper and looked like a little present before I even wrapped them. The color is exactly like the pictures, a soft pink, not bubblegum. She put her hands together right away and laughed when the cat found the bird.

Customer selfie dusty rose gloves

I was worried they'd be too small because I have long fingers. They stretch nicely and the cuff goes way up under my coat sleeve, which matters here in January. My kids think the cat trick is the best thing ever.

Black gloves hands together in the snow

Got the black ones with the silver cat. I wear them on my morning walk and I still put my hands together at the corner just to see it. Hand washed them twice already, laid them flat, and the embroidery looks brand new. Worth the money for something made by one person.

Customer selfie slate grey gloves

I'm 71 and I've knit my whole life, so I'm picky. These are nicely made, even tension, neat fingertips, and the bird is tiny but perfectly done. Shipping was quicker than I expected.

Simple, soft and warm. I leave them on the bench by the door and grab them every time I go out. Bought a second pair for my sister after she kept borrowing mine.
