How the test ran

How the test ran

The wall nobody sees and nobody washes: shaded most of the day, damp most of the year, carrying a green band the whole length of the house about three feet up from the grade line.

How the test ran
Twelve inches of standoff on the wide setting. Whitaker went over the paint by hand once it dried, looking for the marks a bad tool leaves.
The test he respected most. Paint and pressure are a bad marriage — get too close with the narrow setting and the clear coat pays for it. And this tool has enough behind it to do real damage if it is used carelessly.

On day nine Whitaker drove out to a gravel yard with no water supply within a quarter mile, carrying two gallons in a galvanized bucket. Filter basket in the bucket, battery in the tool, trigger. The concrete apron there had not been touched in years.

There is an attachment being advertised everywhere at the moment — a pistol grip with a slim chrome wand and a slotted “turbo” head on the end. You screw it onto an ordinary garden hose and it is supposed to turn that hose into a pressure washer. No battery, no motor, around $49. It looks, at a glance, a lot like the tool in this test. If you have seen it, you have probably wondered the same thing readers kept asking: does that work instead?
Whitaker bought one and ran it over the same brick patio before the main test. It is honestly made — solid brass hose fitting, a proper machined wand, a real chamber in the head. The jet is fast and thin and it looks impressive. It rinsed the loose top layer of dirt off the brick and pushed the silt to the sides — and then it stopped, because the algae film underneath is bonded to the stone and takes force to break.
Twenty-two minutes of work. The loose top layer rinsed off and washed to the sides; the film underneath never moved, and the brick is still not visible. Nothing is wrong with how the fitting is made — the problem is what it is being asked to do.
After twenty-two minutes he had cleaned a patch about four feet by two — roughly 8 sq ft. At that rate the patio the battery unit finished in 41 minutes would have taken over twenty hours, and the moss stayed in the joints.
The reason is not workmanship, it is arithmetic. A household tap delivers water at roughly 40 to 60 psi, set by your street main and your plumbing, and nothing screwed onto the far end of the hose can change that number. A nozzle narrows the opening, so the same water leaves faster through a smaller hole — more speed, less volume, and exactly the same pressure behind it.
